The territory of the protected area – Danum Valley – is 438 square kilometers. This is the most protected and least disturbed area of tropical forest in Southeast Asia. The tallest trees in the world grow here.
Danum Valley is home to many animals that are also protected, such as elephants, orangutans, clouded leopards, gibbons and a huge number of birds.
In January 2019, an international team of scientists announced the discovery of a giant tree in the Danum Valley. Its height is 100.8 meters (the previous record was 94.1 meters in 2016). The giant tree found is the first hundred-meter tropical tree recorded in the world. In addition, it is the tallest known flowering plant in the world. The team of scientists gave the tree (a species of yellow meranti) the name ‘Menara’, which means ‘tower’ in Malay. According to preliminary calculations, a tree without roots could weigh 81,500 kilograms. First, the giant is found by flying over the forest and measuring the trees with a laser. But to prove the real height of the tree, a person climbs the tree with a measuring tape and physically measures it. According to scientists, it is the humid air and the location of the forest in the valley, where there are no strong winds, that contribute to the growth of trees.
