08.00 Meeting with the guide at the hotel reception. Departure to the park, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. Mount Kinabalu is one of the most prominent mountains in Southeast Asia, located between Asia and Australia. The height of the mountain is 4095.2 meters and it is the 20th highest place in the world. Kinabalu Park is 753.7 square kilometers in size and the biodiversity of the park attracts scientists from all over the world. The park is easily accessible as it is located just 90 km from the state capital, Kota Kinabalu. The park’s reception and botanical gardens are located at an altitude of 1,520 meters above sea level. The trip to the park takes about 2 hours. On the way, there will be a stop at the village of Nabalu, where you can buy local fruits and souvenirs, as well as take pictures of Mount Kinabalu in all its glory.

10.00 Arrival at Kinabalu Park. Enjoy this wonderful mountain air. We will walk along the forest trail in Silau Silau, then visit the botanical garden where wild plants from all over Kinabalu Park have been collected. About 1000 species of orchids grow in the park, 12% of which are endemic, 17 of 48 medinila species, including seven endemics, as well as many other endemic species of rhododendrons, nepentes, oaks and bamboos, as well as 22 species of tree ferns.

12.00 Lunch at a local restaurant.

12.45 Departure to the hot springs located 47 km from Kinabalu Park. First we will visit the bridges which are suspended about 30-40m above the ground. To get to the bridges, you will have to walk 300 meters up the mountain through the rainforest. After the bridges, you can walk 500 meters to Kipungit waterfall, where you can swim in the cool mountain water.

After the walk, you will have free time to swim in the hot springs. Sulfur springs were discovered during World War II when Japanese soldiers recuperated in hot baths to treat skin and muscle problems.

There are free open-air baths, or you can rent a wooden cabin with a jacuzzi for 20 ringgit per hour.

15.30 After swimming, we will go to see the rafflesia – the world’s largest flower, which is the national flower of both the state of Sabah and Indonesia. This is a great rarity. This flower has no season and blooms for only four days, but it takes 34 months for the flower to develop. In the state of Sabah, there are three members of this family, Rafflesia arnoldii, Rafflesia keithii and Rafflesia pricei. No botanic garden in the world has yet managed to grow this flower artificially, because it is parasitic on a liana, it has no stem or roots, nor leaves, only a five-petalled flower is visible. Its diameter can reach almost a meter. Flowers are pollinated by flies, transferring pollen from the male flower to the ovary of the female flower. Successful pollination requires both the female and male flowers in the same area. Local residents boil the flower buds and drink the decoction, which, according to local customs, helps women regain their strength after childbirth. The flower is named after Sir Stamford Raffles, who found the flower in Sumatra in May 1818.

Thanks to the rich soil, this wonder can be seen in the gardens of local residents for 30 ringgit.

16.00 Departure to the hotel.

18.00 Estimated arrival time at the hotel.
