Tour programme

06.30 Meeting with the driver at the hotel reception. Transfer to Kota Kinabalu Airport. Transfer to Sandakan. Recommended flight Kota Kinabalu – Sandakan AK6490.

09.30 Arrival in Sandakan where you will be met by your guide. Going to Labuk Bay to see howler monkeys.

11.30 The beginning of the feeding of long-tailed monkeys.

The Labuk Center was established in 1994 and is the only place on the island of Borneo where you can see them very close, as they are used to humans, but feeding the animals yourself is prohibited. The center of Labuk was started by a Chinese businessman who decided to leave the mangrove forest for the animals and started planting a palm plantation so that the animals would have a place to live. Now, every day the proboscis monkeys receive food consisting of special pancakes and vegetables.

Return to Sepilok.

12.45 Lunch at a local cafe.

14.00 A visit to the Sun Bear Rehabilitation Center in Sepilok, which was opened in 2014 to rescue cubs that have ended up in human hands as pets, used for money or orphaned. Currently, 45 bears live in the center. Bears are returned to the natural environment.

15.00 Visit to the Orangutan Rehabilitation Center. It was established in 1964 to rescue animals from extinction and bring them back to permanent life. Most of the animals come here as babies, after the death of the female (man-made or due to disease). Babies learn to be steady by the age of seven. There is a feeding platform where food is brought twice a day at 10.00 and 15.00. Orangutans who have already been released come to this feeding. You can also visit the nursery where babies are fed with milk bottles and cared for like human children.

Orangutans are the largest apes of Asia and the only representatives of great apes on this continent. The weight of males in nature reaches 190 kg, and in zoos – up to 250 kg, because they get fat in captivity. Height – 1.4 meters, but there are also data on 1.58 meters tall. Hand stroke – up to 3 meters. Males have huge plump facial growths like pads that frame the face from above. Females weigh around 80 kg, length – up to 1.15 meters. Lives on the island of Kalimantan.

According to DNA, this monkey is the closest relative of humans, with a 97% match. Great apes lack only a regulator in the HAR1F gene, which is important for brain structure.

Pregnancy in orangutans lasts 9 months, and life expectancy in good conditions is up to 60 years (on average about 35 years). Fruit makes up 65-90% of an orangutan’s diet, with a preference for fruits with sweet or fatty flesh. They usually eat figs because they are easy to harvest and digest. Bornean orangutans consume at least 317 different products – both young leaves, bark, insects, honey and even bird eggs. Their favorite fruit is durian. Orangutans are the largest primates that live in trees and make a new nest every day.

16.00 Transfer to Sandakan Airport, transfer to Kota Kinabalu. Recommended flight: Sandakan – Kota Kinabalu АK6499.

19.30 Arrival in Kota Kinabalu, transfer with driver to hotel. End of tour.

Things to bring: LIGHT CLOTHING * HAT * SUNSCREEN * SUNGLASSES * MOSQUITO REPELLENT * CAMERA * LOCAL CURRENCY FOR PURCHASES
