Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque – Considered to be one of the most beautiful mosques in Southeast Asia. Named after Omar Ali Saifuddin III, who was the 28th Sultan of Brunei, and who also initiated its construction. The building was completed in 1958 and is a symbol of modern Islamic architecture. “Brunei Times” wrote that the mosque is a combination of Mughal and Malay style, its architect and sculptor was the Italian architect Rudolfo Nolli. The design was helped by Rudolfo Nolli together with the Sultan. After that, improvements were introduced – the mosque was raised on an elevation, a lagoon was created and others. The construction was carried out by Malayan engineers. Estimated cost was $7.7-$9.2 million. A bridge leads to the barge, which is a replica of the barge of Sultan Bokiah Mahligai in the 16th century. The barge was completed in 1967 to commemorate the 1400th anniversary of the Nuzul Al-Quaran (Revelation of the Qur’an). It was used as a stage for a Quran recitation competition. The mosque is located on a 52-meter high elevation. One of the most impressive things is the golden domes. The mosque combines Renaissance and Italian architectural styles, it is decorated with marble pillars, stained glass and chandeliers. Almost all materials for the construction of the mosque were imported from abroad: marble from Italy, granite from Shanghai, crystal chandeliers from Great Britain and carpets from Saudi Arabia.
