Labuan Island, one of the three federal territories of Malaysia, is popular for its duty-free shops. Only 100,000 people live on the island, but there are many migrant workers who work in the oil industry, so intimate services are also available here. On weekends, this is a popular hangout for Bruneians. You can buy chocolate, perfumery, alcoholic beverages here at attractive prices. The Malaysian Navy and Air Force are also based here.
During the tour we will see the following:
– the Labuan Museum, which tells the story of Labuan from British colonial times to World War II and the declaration of Labuan as a federal territory;
– Labuan Memorial Park. The World War II Memorial in Labuan is the largest memorial in Malaysia, the last refuge of 3,908 war heroes from Australia, Great Britain, India, New Zealand and Malaysia;
– The Labuan Coal Mine Museum, on the grounds of which there is a chimney, which is a kind of mystery. The 106-foot-tall structure is made of 23,000 red bricks imported from England. At first it was thought to be a ventilation pipe, but it was recently discovered that there were no traces of smoke, so its purpose remains a mystery. Some believe that the chimney is an unfinished mansion. In the museum you can get acquainted with the history of coal mines in Labuan (from 1847);
– A bird park that hosts various species of birds from the island of Borneo.
