Labuan island – one of the three federal territories in Malaysia that is popular for its duty-free shops. Only 100,000 people live on the island, but there are many migrant workers who work in the oil industry, so intimate services are also available here. On weekends, this is a popular hangout for Bruneians. Here you can buy chocolate, perfumery, alcoholic beverages at attractive prices.

Prices:

  • Whisky Red Label, 1 litre – 11 EUR;
  • Whisky Chivas Regal, 12 gadi, 1 litre – 18 EUR;
  • Whisky Chivas Regal, 18 gadi, 1 litre – 59 EUR;
  • Champagne Moet&Chandon Rose Imperial, 0,75 litre – 50 EUR;
  • Bottle of wine 0,7 litre – no 4,5 EUR.

We recommend shopping at the One stop Duty Free store, where product quality is guaranteed. The assortment of the store is huge, you can even buy the classic and blackcurrant Riga Balsam.

You can legally drink alcohol in the country after reaching the age of 21. In Malaysia, it is illegal to sell it to Muslims because the law forbids Muslims to drink it. Alcohol is therefore heavily taxed and is the third most expensive country in the world to consume intoxicating liquor after Norway and Singapore.

Important notes: please note that one person is allowed 1 liter of hard liquor to be taken out of Labuan Island. If you want to buy more drinks, ask the store to fill out a special form with the drinks you bought, showing the reduced prices, then you will have to pay a small tax when you leave.

Main entrance to the port

To get from Kota Kinabalu to Labuan island, you must:

  • you need to go to Jesselton Point, which is located in the center of the city. This can be done by taxi or using the Grab application;
  • you must arrive at the port by 07.00.

Ticket sales hall

When entering the port, there is a building on the right side with the inscription Ticketing Hall, where you need to buy a round trip ticket. You have to go to the 4th ticket office, where tickets to Labuan are sold.

The ticket costs around 33 EUR (total round trip). We recommend taking the first class, because the second class is very windy and very cold. We recommend bringing a jacket or scarf, seasickness tablets, snacks and water.

Ferry

After buying tickets you have to go to the ferry.

07.30 boarding the ferry begins. The Migration Department will check your passport before boarding

08.00 the ferry departs. The journey takes three hours or more depending on the weather.

 DUTY FREE shop
