Mulu Park. A small plane (flights from Kuching or Kota Kinabalu with MASwings) descends between mountains and rainforests. The park is inaccessible, which is why it has remained untouched for millions of years. The longest cave system in the world, the flight of millions of bats from Deer and Lang Caves, the underground river in Clearwater and Wind Caves. A boat ride down the river to a local village selling various trinkets made by the Iban tribe. A walk to the waterfall along the rainforest trails – that’s the real Borneo.
Upon arrival at Mulu Park, guests are met by the park bus, which takes them to the park’s reception (5-minute drive. Guests pay 1.5 EUR on the spot).
14.30 The beginning of the tour. An easy hike along wooden paths to Deer and Lang caves.
The 3 km trail leads through swamp and rainforest, rivers and ancient burial sites of the Penan people. Deer cave is huge, it is one of the largest cave passages in the world. Its length is 2 km, it is 90 meters high and wide. The main cave is flooded with sunlight and is 192 meters high and 174 meters wide. This is the place where the deer came to seek refuge, so the local Penan and Beravan people named this cave the Deer Cave, or Gua Rusa or Gua Payau in the local language.
The path leads around the caves, the road is covered with bat droppings, of which there are millions (27 different species). Going all the way out, visitors come to the Garden of Eden, where various plants grow under the sunlight. The southern entrance to the cave is guarded by a profile of Lincoln.
Every evening around 17.00-19.00, bats fly out like a black cloud from Deer alas, which go hunting. According to the latest research, there are more than one million bats. Visitors have the opportunity to sit comfortably and wait for this unique view.
Next to the Deer Cave is the Lang Cave, which is one of the smaller caves, but definitely worth a visit to see the stalactites and stalagmites.
Return to the hotel after dark.
06.30 Breakfast at the park cafe and checking out of the hotel.
07.00 After breakfast, a walk to the canopy skywalk, where you can observe birds and animals. The bridges are 480 meters long and are located 15-25 meters above the ground. It’s a real adventure! A 30-meter high observation tower is also available for keen photographers.
08.45 Departure by traditional long boat to the Wind and Clean water caves. On the way to the caves, guests visit the Penan village, where it is possible to meet local people and buy souvenirs.
Clearwater Cave is the longest cave in Asia, its length is about 107 km. There is an underground river in the cave that you can ride a boat on. There are two ways to reach this cave: you can walk 4 km along a forest path, which takes about 1.5 hours, or you can take a boat along the Melinau River. When traveling by boat, guests usually visit Vinda Cave on the way, the trip takes about 15 minutes. If the water level in the river is low, the trip may take longer because the boatman has to jump out of the boat and push the boat.
Wind Cave is so named because you can feel the flow of wind in the narrow passages of the cave. Wind Cave is part of the Clearwater Cave System. The cave features beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, some of which are illuminated, such as in the ‘King’s Room’.
From Wind Cave, you can walk along a wooden path or take a boat to the entrance of Clearwater Cave, where lunch is served. Clearwater Cave is only 5 minutes away by foot or boat. To get to the caves, you have to climb 200 steps, which may be difficult for older people, but this beautiful cave with an underground river is definitely worth it. After visiting Clearwater Cave, swim in the clear river, relax and enjoy lunch.
Return to the park reception, transfer to the airport by park bus (5-minute ride. Guests pay 1.5 EUR on the spot).
1. Alu piedzīvojumi
