Tour programme

08.30  Meeting with the guide at the hotel reception. Departure to Sarawak Ethnographic Museum.

09.00 Sarawak Cultural Village is a living museum located next to Damai Beach. Its territory is 17 acres. Visitors have the opportunity to get acquainted with the largest ethnographic groups of the state, their traditions and lifestyle, and to look into their dwellings.

Here you can see the exact replicas of the houses of the seven ethnic groups. The largest ethnic group in Sarawak is the Iban people, who are famous for headhunting and live in a long house (the whole village lives in one building, each family has a room and a common corridor where guests are received and entertained), you can see skulls hanging from the ceiling. The entrance to the house is through a log with steps cut into it, and the roof is made of palm leaves. The Bidayuh Round Hunter’s House is built by head hunters to store skulls and recount their adventures. Only men were allowed to enter the house. There will be a demonstration of sugarcane juicing and grain cleaning. In the Orang Ulu longhouse, you will be able to see how tattoos are done and how skilled girls make jewelry from beads. The Chinese farmer’s house, which is built on the ground and not on stilts, resembles a real house compared to the other native buildings. Melanau’s high house is one of the most interesting because it is built on 40-foot stilts. This group lived by the sea and needed protection from pirates. The first floor has a living room, but if you go up to the second floor you can see the bedrooms. Perfect for tropical climates, the Malay hut is built on stilts and is a great way to entertain. The house has large floor-to-ceiling windows that bring in lots of light and fresh air. Try the traditional Malay games of Gasing (train) and Cangkak (board game). A Penan hut is the home of traveling nomads, which they quickly built for a few weeks or a month when they again went on to wander through the forests. Here you can learn how to shoot arrows from an air tube. Penan advice for shooting: “Don’t blow with your mouth. Blow with your chest and belly.”

11.00 After getting to know the ethnic houses, there will be a musical performance by local natives with dances in the village theater.

12.30 Lunch at a local restaurant.

13.00 Departure for a city tour. Kuching is the capital of the state of Sarawak. This is the largest state in Malaysia in terms of territory.

On the excursion you will visit:

  • The Kuching River Waterfront, which is the historic part of the city;

  • On the banks of the Kuching River, from the outside you will see The Astana Palace, currently the residence of the Governor of Sarawak. Astana (Malay for ‘castle’) was built in 1870 by the second ‘White Rajah’, Charles Brooke, as a wedding present to his wife, Margaret Alice Lily de Winte. The couple were married on 28 Oct 1869 in Wiltshire, England. After the marriage, the wife became Her Highness in the Rana of Sarawak. The couple arrived in Sarawak in 1870 and took up residence in a palace. Early in 1913, he published a book, My Life in Sarawak, describing life in the colony. There, in the garden of the palace, Charles Brooke grew betel nuts, with which the chieftains of the Dyaka tribe were treated;
  • Fort Margaret, built by Charles Brooks in 1897 and named after his wife. It is located on the banks of the Kuchin River and can be seen perfectly from the old town. The fort was built in the style of an English castle. Its function was to protect Kuchin from pirate attacks. From 1971 it served as the Police Museum, but today houses the Brooke Gallery, an exhibition showing the history of Sarawak during the Brooke dynasty;
  • Main Bazar and Jalan Capenter streets, where you can buy souvenirs, antiques, handmade by the people of Borneo;
  • The Sarawak Museum, which is the oldest museum on the island of Borneo, was built by the “White Rajah” in 1891. The author of the idea of the museum is Alfred Wallace, a famous traveler and collector of various insects, butterflies and mammals. It was he who suggested the establishment of a museum to Charles Brooke during his visit to Sarawak in 1878. The purpose of the museum was to showcase local arts, crafts, and collections of local animals, birds, and reptiles. The museum currently houses a collection of natural history, specimens of fauna, reptiles, mammals, birds, as well as carvings, musical instruments, antiques and handicrafts from various ethnic groups in Sarawak.
