Tour programme

09.00 / 14.00 Meeting with the guide at the hotel reception. Departure for a city tour. Kuching is the capital of the state of Sarawak. This is the largest state in Malaysia in terms of territory.

During the tour you will visit:

  • the Kuching River Waterfront, which is the historic part of the city;
  • On the banks of the Kuching River, you will see from the outside The Astana Palace, currently the residence of the Governor of Sarawak. Astana (Malay for ‘castle’) was built in 1870 by the second ‘White Rajah’, Charles Brooke, as a wedding present to his wife, Margaret Alice Lily de Winte. The couple were married on 28 Oct 1869 in Wiltshire, England. After the marriage, the wife became Her Highness in the Rana of Sarawak. The couple arrived in Sarawak in 1870 and took up residence in a palace. Early in 1913, he published a book, My Life in Sarawak, describing life in the colony. There, in the garden of the palace, Charles Brooke grew betel nuts, with which the chieftains of the Dyaka tribe were treated;
  • Fort Margaret, built by Charles Brooks in 1897 and named after his wife. It is located on the banks of the Kuchin River and can be seen perfectly from the old town. The fort was built in the style of an English castle. Its function was to protect Kuchin from pirate attacks. From 1971 it served as the Police Museum, but today houses the Brooke Gallery, an exhibition showing the history of Sarawak during the Brooke dynasty;
  • Main Bazar and Jalan Capenter streets, where you can buy souvenirs, antiques, handmade by the people of Borneo;
  • The Sarawak Museum, which is the oldest museum on the island of Borneo, was built by the “White Rajah” in 1891. The author of the idea of the museum is Alfred Wallace, a famous traveler and collector of various insects, butterflies and mammals. It was he who suggested the establishment of a museum to Charles Brooke during his visit to Sarawak in 1878. The purpose of the museum was to showcase local arts, crafts, and collections of local animals, birds, and reptiles. The museum currently houses a collection of natural history, specimens of fauna, reptiles, mammals, birds, as well as carvings, musical instruments, antiques and handicrafts from various ethnic groups in Sarawak.
